It has been the call of every social media influencer that everyone should practice responsible posting and commenting. This is proof that ordinary people can be the subject of online bullying and not just celebrities.
The body shaming culture is brutal, from individuals with little celebrity clout to entertainment royalty like Angel Locsin. A famous photo may go viral and attract criticism with only one lousy snapshot featuring a muffin top. What's more worrying is that not all targets are as gutsy as Locsin, who refuses to be defined by her Darna persona.
Nestor Castro, a cultural anthropologist from UP-Diliman, commented on this ill-culture: "Social media heightened ang isang ugali, lalong-lalo na ng mga Pilipino. Ang Pilipino may kuyog mentality. Pag may nahuling magnanakaw, lahat gustong maki-bugbog. Sa social media nagba-bandwagon effect."
